The Green Deal
The Green Deal is a provision of the 2011 Energy Act. The Green deal sets out to reduce carbon emissions in the UK ‘by revolutionising the energy efficiency of British properties’ in a cost effective manner.

As a result of legislation laid down in the Climate Change Act 2008, the UK is legally obliged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. The Act set carbon budgets that have to be adhered to across all areas of the UK’s economy which includes homes and workplaces. Every country in the European Union (EU) has its own individual targets but it will take a huge combined effort to meet those set for the UK as less than 1% of our energy currently comes from renewable sources.
Households and businesses each account for around one quarter of the UK’s carbon emissions and the government target is to substantially reduce this figure by 2050. The aim of the Green Deal is to help households and businesses to improve the energy efficiency of the properties they own in a way that is both effective and financially viable. Under the Green Deal property owners will be able to install energy efficient technologies paid for by the savings from their fuel bill.
The focus of the energy company obligation (ECO) will be on anyone who is unable to achieve significant energy savings without additional support such as householders on a low income and those people who own difficult to treat properties.
